“It allows me to do what I’ve always wanted to do, and to come to a place where I can immerse myself in research,” Professor Diana Boraschi shared her story in her office at the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology. As an immunologist from Italy, she has pursued scientific research for over 50 years, with footprints across Europe, Asia, and the United States. Now based in Guangming, Shenzhen, she continues to advance research in cutting-edge fields. A passion for science, born on the shores of the Mediterranean, has crossed oceans to find a new home in this global hub of innovation.

Diana's Connection With China

In 2006, Diana first came to China as part of a China-Italy collaborative research project. She worked alongside Chinese scientists to explore innovative immunomodulatory therapies based on traditional Chinese medicine, actively promoting international scientific cooperation. In 2022, she was awarded the “Chinese Government Friendship Award,” the highest honor granted by the Chinese government to foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to China’s modernization.

This February, as a representative of foreign experts, Diana was invited to attend a Spring Festival symposium in Beijing, where she joined Premier Li Qiang and 60 other international experts to offer suggestions for China’s future development. “The Premier made a very interesting speech,” she recalled, noting that what particularly energized her was “he underlined the importance of opening China to the rest of the world.” Drawing on her own research and observations, Diana also put forward recommendations at the meeting in three areas: ecological protection, women’s development, and the contituity and innovation of scientific research.

As an expert in infectious diseases, Diana is a strong advocate for global scientific collaboration. “Infectious disease that I work with do not see borders. So studying things (only) in Asia, Oceania, or in South America makes no sense. We must work together.” With this in mind, she also shared her expectations for the upcoming APEC meeting.

Diana expressed strong anticipation for the laboratory set to open soon in Guangming. She noted that construction is progressing, and once the facility becomes operational as scheduled this year, it will serve as a hub for high-level immunology research. “Guangming is a very young district,” she said. “It gave me an impression that everything is starting now. A lot of new initiatives, institutes and companies are coming up.” Looking ahead to the next five years, Diana expressed two expectations: that the laboratory will be successfully put into operation to continue advancing immunology research, and that it will help develop vaccines for major infectious diseases, contributing to global health research.

In Diana’s view, scientific research is a long-term endeavor that requires steady progress. From her perspective, Guangming Science City is also advancing steadily in building world-class research facilities and attracting top-tier talent, gradually establishing an innovation ecosystem that spans from the laboratory to the production line. It is both an ideal place for scientific aspirations, and fertile ground for Shenzhen to advance international scientific cooperation and original innovations.

g to be hosted in Shenzhen this year: “APEC is a way to connect people in a much better fashion, which I hope can be expanded globally.” She hopes that Shenzhen will further strengthen global health collaboration in biomedical research, contributing to the resolution of global health challenges.

The "Lucky" Encounter with Shenzhen

Diana’s connection with Shenzhen began by chance. Several years ago, Li Yang, a former PhD student she had supervised, moved to Shenzhen for career development and invited her to join. “I’m very glad I came, and I found an excellent environment,” she said. “It was by chance, but it was a fortunate one,” she said.

Currently, Diana serves as a Distinguished Professor at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology. She greatly appreciates the university’s open and inclusive character: “It is a very young university. I think this is an advantage that can attract more people from every country to work here, and at the same time to implement active exchanges.” In her view, exchange and cooperation are not only essential scientific principles but also a shared human approach to addressing today’s global challenges. “A lot of wars and fights are going around globally, which is due to misunderstanding, and the only way of understanding is knowing each other (through active exchanges).”

As Diana observed, in recent years, SUAT has continuously expanded its international cooperation in science and education, establishing partnerships with 52 universities across 24 countries and regions. These collaborations span a range of cutting-edge fields, including new materials, synthetic biology and life and health sciences. As an educator, Diana is also optimistic about her students’ future development:“This university is  focusing on advanced technologies, and there are a lot of interactions with companies. So they will have many possibilities in their life.”

Exploring the Future of Immunology in Guangming

As a renowned international immunologist, Diana has achieved outstanding results in the study of innate immunity and inflammation. A segment of the interleukin-1 (IL-1) molecular structure with immunostimulatory properties that she discovered was named the “Boraschi loop” after her surname, paving the way for new treatments for immune diseases and advanced cancer research.

“I have many interesting research (projects),” Diana said with pride as she spoke about her current work in Shenzhen. Her research focuses, on the one hand, on the interaction between microorganisms and human cells, exploring ways to enhance human immunity by modulating microbes—particularly in the context of global aging, providing scientific support for the question of how to maintain a healthy life in old age. On the other hand, she is deeply engaged in the field of nanomedicine, working on the development of novel vaccines and targeted therapies.
